Thandikhaya Magayiyana, professionally known as Joliza Bhacasoul, was born on August 30, 1991, in Gqeberha, South Africa. With deep family roots in Emawusheni Village, KwaBhaca (formerly Mount Frere, in the Old Transkei Homeland), Joliza has developed a unique sound that blends his Bhaca heritage with contemporary music, which he calls Bhacasoul.
Joliza began experimenting with music in 2005 and has since crafted his own path, composing and independently releasing singles, EPs, and albums. His music has been featured on national stations like Radio2000, Umhlobo Wenene FM, and TruFM, as well as local stations like KQ FM and Bay FM. His first commercial project, Bhacasoul Experience, a 5-song EP distributed through Platoon, was released on May 5, 2023.
While his music incorporates elements of Afrosoul, jazz, and maskandi, Joliza defines his sound as Bhacasoul, deeply rooted in traditional Bhaca rhythms such as ukucwiya (spiritual singing), ukuvalela (spiritual humming), and ukusina (spiritual dancing).
